Treasure Appears To Be Teasing Something New For Long Dormant Guardian Heroes

Japanese studio Treasure, known for the nostalgia of greatest hits, Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, Gunstar Heroes, and Sin & Punishment, appear to be teasing that something new is coming to 1996’s Guardian Heroes. Thanks, Time Extension.

It would make sense as the math here confirms that this year marks 30 years since the fighting RPG’s launch, and despite being a pretty unique idea for a franchise, Treasure hasn’t done much with the title aside from a 2011 Xbox Live Arcade remaster that is no longer playable in the current video gaming environment.

In a couple of posts over the past few days, Treasure shared new art of the lead character, Serena, along with the rest of the cast, and some pretty Japanese poems that are either dead giveaways for a remake or the most extreme self-ownings.

The posts read as such [in order of appearance above]:

“look forward to future developments”

“Common sense? For now, I decided to just charge straight at it head-on.
I seriously chased after “Can’t you make that even more fun?”
And carved out a view no one’s ever seen before, all on my own.
Rough around the edges. Pretty much reckless. Sometimes it spun out of control.
But that’s exactly why it was the real deal.

Oh, I got the image wrong.
Sega’s gonna be mad at me.”

“Ah, Treasure-san, not yet.”
Days of getting scolded by Sega-sama.

This seemingly follows news from this week that Sega plans to revive some of its long-dormant titles through a new initiative called “Sega Universe.” The company describes this as, quote, “a project based on the concept of ‘NO OLD, STAY GOLD,’ which shines a light on classic titles that are still loved by fans, distinct from current titles, and aims to transcend the world of games and deliver new ways to enjoy them. As the first phase, we will develop anniversary projects that focus on titles that will celebrate their anniversaries in 2026, delivering nostalgic yet new entertainment content.”

Guardian Heroes was included on a list of titles namedropped as part of Sega Universe, so there could very well be something here under all the poetry.
