The next main entry in PlayStation’s racing sim franchise, Gran Turismo 7 has been delayed to 2022, Sony announced in a statement.
The reason behind the delay? PlayStation says the game was affected by COVID-19 pandemic issues during production. The question of Gran Turismo 7‘s status was initially held back by PlayStation PR during a recent Jim Ryan interview with GQ but was later confirmed by a Sony spokesperson in a statement.
“Gran Turismo 7 has been impacted by Covid-related production challenges and therefore will shift from 2021 to 2022. With the ongoing pandemic, it’s a dynamic and changing situation and some critical aspects of game production have been slowed over the past several months. We’ll share more specifics on Gran Turismo 7’s release date when available.”
Gran Turismo 7 was officially revealed during PS5’s Future of Gaming Showcase back in June with no actual confirmation of its release at the time. Close to the launch of the PS5, it was revealed in a “New Worlds to Explore” video on PlayStation’s official YouTube channel that the game would release in the first half of 2021. PlayStation would alter this later after the news came out but expectations were that it would still come out in 2021 but that’s no longer the case.
The last time a mainline Gran Turismo entry came out was back in 2013 on the PS3 with Gran Turismo 6, but we did get a little Gran Turismo taste on PS4 in 2017 with Gran Turismo Sport. Either way, the next entry in PlayStation’s racing sim franchise is going to take its time.
