As we get closer to the end of the year, Koei Tecmo has released new information on Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse‘s characters, setting and synopsis in a thank you video message from producer, Fukaya as a part of the franchise’s 21-year anniversary.

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is set to take place in southern Japan, specifically on the Rogetsu Isle after a decade in which five young girls mysteriously disappeared during a moonlight festival. The kidnappers of the young girls were Dr. Haibara and his team that brought them to their makeshift hospital and plan to use them as guinea pigs for a possible “Moonlight Syndrome” cure.

Many years later the three remaining girls are now teenagers in the present day and together are planning to investigate the facility, solve their foggy memories, and the reason behind the deaths of the two girls. Nowadays the former hotel turned hospital is in ruins which is the site where the player will be able to explore the now haunted location alongside other locations including Cape Tsukiyomi Lighthouse, and the Yomotsuki Residence. ancient shrines and more. The upcoming release is a remake of the original Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse which was previously shown during a Nintendo Direct presentation. The original game was initially launched only in Japan on the Wii in July 2008 and the 2023 version of the game will be the first time western Fatal Frame players will officially be able to play the game in English and other localized languages. As a part of the game, Koei Tecmo will also release a special Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse OP for special edition holders which also comes with the Rogetsu Isle Dinner Party Costume Set, a digital art book, and the original soundtrack included.

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is set to launch on PC (via Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on March 9th, 2023.
