Legendary Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi’s next game has been in development for quite some time. I’ve been eager to see what his next game would exactly be about and if the trailers are anything to go by, this is something we’ve yet to see explored in the medium.
For starters, I don’t think we’ve seen a video game blend physical locations with 3D characters. Mistwalker has created over 150 handmade dioramas to help develop their next game, Fantasia. The developers then overlay the character models on top of the dioramas and you get what we see below. The only downside, according to Sakaguchi? Ensuring that the vision is set from the start because making adjustments would be a headache to each diorama.

We’re only now learning exactly what the game is about and it sounds exactly as you’d expect from Sakaguchi. You play as amnesiac Leo, who awakens to a massive explosion, lost in a foreign land and with one memory to him. He’ll search out and reclaim his lost memories while exploring a new land full of bizarre, mechanical infections that are engulfing the world.
The captivating story is written by Sakaguchi and is complemented by a sweeping soundtrack by celebrated Final Fantasy composer, Nobuo Uematsu.
Fantasian is coming to Apple Arcade on iPhone, IPad, Mac and Apple TV devices in 2021.
