Elden Ring takes place in The Lands Between, a realm once governed by Queen Marika and the divine power of the titular Elden Ring. However, the Elden Ring was shattered, leading to a catastrophic event known as The Shattering. Demigods—Marika’s offspring—claimed fragments of the ring, known as Great Runes. This plunged the Lands Between into chaos and war. You play as a Tarnished, an exiled being summoned back to the Lands Between to restore the Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord.
Elden Ring originally launched for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on February 25th, 2022, and has sold over 30 million units in its lifetime. The game’s expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, was released in 2024, and its multiplayer-focused spinoff, Elden Ring Nightreign, was released in 2025. A Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, which includes the base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, is set to release in 2026, following a delay from 2025.
