Feels like each month since Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World‘s Dragon Quest Day announcement, we learn just a bit more about the 2026 Dragon Quest spinoff game and August is not about to break that tradition. Square Enix has revealed more details about Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World‘s story alongside reveals of new characters, discoveries to uncover, and mechanics in the lead-up to its December launch, according to a press release.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World‘s dual protagonists, Bianca and Nera will travel to the Kingdom of Witherwood and it’s a little hard to believe look at it now, but it was once a lush and fertile land, thanks to the enduring protection of the Archeagles. In current times, not so much as the forces of darkness have taken claim of the kingdom as our heroes alongside newly bonded allies attempt to take on that very evil and bring back the light to Witherwood.
Darkness has literally taken root in the form of crystals known as Meteocite, which have the not-so-fun power of absorbing the despair of the people and drain the land of its life’s energy. The player will listen to the Kingdom of Witherwood’s civilians and undertake the task of destroying the crystalized parasite and bringing back peace to the land. We even get a proper introduction of some of those Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World characters that Bianca and Nera will meet.
Thespidor (Played by Feliks Mathur)
Thespidor is the elusive misdirector of the Tragedian Players and the The “showrunner of the darkness below.” Thespidor created the meteocite crystals, though his motives for doing so are unclear. He will appear time and again throughout the adventure.
King Withers (Played by Kim Durham)
As his royal title infers, King Withers is the solemn yet dependable monarch of Witherwood and after asking the protagonists to save his kingdom, he does all in his power to help them on their quest. Though he looks rather glum, the King always has a joke up his sleeve to improve the mood of his subjects.
Ed (Played by Vinay Lad)
Ed is a self-styled “living legend” of the monster-wrangling world. This rambunctious boy first appears in Witherwood Castle. With Scruffy
never far from his side, Ed is eager to show off in front of the protagonists.
Scruffy (Played by Tobias Weatherbur)
A born prankster said to hail from Pays de l’Oseille, Scruffy is best buddies with Ed and his partner in mischief.
Assumedly after handling business in Kingdom of Witherwood, the land becom,es their home base of sorts as the duo goes off to explore the world’s other regions and what they have to offer. Those new locations will have their own unique biomes which, looking at the latest screenshots, include areas like plains, snowy mountains, dessert, and more. Each biome has its own unique explorable areas and dungeons too. Players exploring the world will run into enemies with a visual aura showing that they won’t be easy to take down.
Square Enix has also detailed new information on a new mechanic in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. Players exploring the world will discover Roots of Creation and
Lifebuds, shrivelled remnants of the Archeagles’ waning power that lost its energy to darkness. In Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, players will find the Waterwing Can tool to help revitalize the bud. Doing so, when you walk up, the revived bud will heal your monsters or even synthesize new ones. There will be times, an enemy will be hanging out near a bud and if you defeat them, you’ll earn a big reward.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is launching later this year for PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 3rd, 2026. Physical versions will be available for PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
