Sega is going more all in on video game adaptations as the publisher has signed a new multi-title deal with Netflix, with the major news is that a Crazy Taxi comedy movie is in the works at the streamer with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writing duo behind last year’s reboot of The Naked Gun are attached to the project alongside Sega’s Toru Nakahara plus Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher set to produce the film adaptation, according to Variety.
“We couldn’t be more excited to continue our longstanding relationship with Sega and bring ‘Crazy Taxi’ to life with our partners at Netflix. This film is for anyone who’s spent hours behind the wheel of a yellow cab on their Dreamcast, with the music cranked up, smashing through everything in sight just to make the next fare,” Moritz and Ascher said in a statement.
That’s not all the news, as part of the deal, a new Sonic the Hedgehog kids series alongside a film adaptation of Stranger Than Heaven are in development; even before we know if the next game from RGG Studios is good enough or not to get a movie.
“Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up, With ‘Crazy Taxi,’ ‘Sonic’ and ‘Stranger Than Heaven,’ we get to work across three completely different eras of Sega’s catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences,” Netflix’s VP of nonfiction and transmedia, Brandon Riegg, said in a statement.
“Expect something cute yet cool for ‘Sonic,’ hilariously crazy for ‘Crazy Taxi’ and a badass action drama for ‘Stranger Than Heaven,’ because we’ve got some amazing creative ideas lined up and we are just getting started. The whole team is absolutely thrilled!” Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise producer, Toru Nakahara added.
