Destiny 2 The Final Shape

Bungie Confirms Destiny 2: The Final Shape Is Delayed To June

And just weeks removed from massive layoffs

The gaming industry, communities, and Sony haven’t been on the best of terms over the last several weeks when it comes to Destiny 2. For some, today’s news will not change that.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape has been officially delayed 5 months to June 4th, 2023. That’s according to the latest update from Bungie that reads off the top: “We’ll keep it short and simple. The Final Shape needs more time to become exactly what we want it to be, so we’re moving its release date.”

In recent months and years, release dates have shifted a number of times for games big and small. But for Destiny 2: The Final Shape, this is a major delay for an expansion and DLC that is as Bungie puts it, “the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling and, for Guardians everywhere, countless hours spent together.” All of that looms over the fact that one month ago, dozens of staff at the development studio were let go.

Bungie assures current players that Season of the Wish is still arriving on time on November 28th and it will extend until next June when the expansion is released.

They’re also making some changes to the game’s releases like moving up Guardian Games to March, in April “delivering a two-month content update,” and three new PvP maps on May.

Sony purchased Bungie for approximately $3.6 billion in mid-2022, stating layoffs would not follow. While Bungie itself says it takes responsibility for the recent job losses, it’s still left a sour taste in the mouth of many players and the large Destiny 2 fan base.

Following the initial layoff report, it was confirmed that 100 employees were laid off this past week, eight percent of the studio’s 1,200-employed team. PlayStation did not reportedly conduct the layoffs, but rather Bungie took on that responsibility, which was done due to Destiny 2 underperforming and the preorder sales of The Final Shape expansion being lower than expected, according to IGN.

To close out their update, the dev team writes: “We are excited to have the extra time needed to bring our vision for The Final Shape to life for all of you. We’re looking forward to sharing much more in April, including all-new gameplay, to showcase the significant content additions currently in development.”
