Boreal Tenebrae

Boreal Tenebrae Is One Weird Game

Red Deer Games has one weird title under its publishing belt and quite honestly, it’s calling to me like a moth to a flame. When this email landed in my inbox, it stood out because it was described as Stranger Things x Twin Peaks. How could anyone not see that and at least read what this game was all about?

Thankfully, I read the email and watched the video for Boreal Tenebrae and it is weird. I’m partial to experiences that take you outside of the normalcy most games offer these days. Oh, and Boreal Tenebrae was nominated for Best Art Direction and Best Narrative at the Canadian Game Awards 2021, so supporting Canadian developers is a must.

This retro-styled adventure inspired by the PlayStation 1 era, is full of mystery and uses horror elements to tell a story. You’ll dive into a gloomy world where you live in a diseased and dying town where Bree is looking for her sister Sarah. After a ritual went wrong, Sarah vanished, so it’s up to you to find her and bring her back to safety.

You’ll play as multiple characters, each with a backstory, travel around town and try to solve a murder while looking for your sister.
