Black Myth: Zhong Kui

15 Minutes Of Black Myth: Zhong Kui Gameplay Just Dropped

Developer Game Science released a 15-minute look at its next game, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, and it looks like a worthy follow-up to Black Myth: Wukong. We get a look at the new playable character, some of the world, and the gameplay mechanics that’ll challenge players.

With blood beneath my blade, I paint new rouge upon my face,
An old friend visits, in a dream taking place.
Old faces, bygone deeds, have vanished from my sight,
Still, I remember every one, by day and through the night.
Those bound by love grow old; the righteous road runs long;
Today’s notes of grace or grudge define not the final song.
Who says the Underworld is far away?
All the better—once more I’ll walk along.

Moving away from Journey to the West, the second game now follows the Chinese folktale ‘Zhong Kui Banishing Evil,’ where he was essentially an exorcist banishing ghosts and evil.

The trailer shows Zhong Kui taking on a series of enemies, including dogs, archers, and monsters. We also see him use some sort of fire bomb against a group of enemies that immolates them, along with the trees where the character is fighting them. The fighting continues as these enemies turn to dust and vanish.

Zhong Kui then moves through the forest path and up through a cave before coming out the other side and proceeding to follow a group of insects. This path has more monstrous creatures appearing, and they prove to be a challenge.

We then see Zhong Kui head underwater into a lake, where he swims into it before finding a woman’s body. As he’s pushed back by some sort of creature, he ends up on the lake’s shore before a hulking monster appears and a boss fight ensues.

It clearly has several phases as the fight ramps up, with the monster tearing its own wings off before getting right back into the thick of battle. We see the protagonist continually challenge and even parry the incoming attacks with a ton of style, and it looks incredible.

The trailer ends with a look at the rest of the game.

Last year, we got our first look at Black Myth: Zhong Kui at Opening Night Live. The game had a brief description:

“Set against the backdrop of the classic Chinese folktale ‘Zhong Kui Banishing Evil,’ Black Myth: Zhong Kui is a single-player action role-playing game rooted in ancient Chinese fantasy. The game will deliver distinctive experiences and gameplay features that push our limits, while also bringing fresh ideas and necessary changes to address past flaws and regrets.”

Black Myth: Zhong Kui is currently in development.
