Assassin’s Creed Shadows Shows Off Extended 13-Minute Playthough, Featuring Yasuke and Naoe Gameplay

Closing out this year’s Ubisoft Forward was the promised deep dive of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a 13-minute preview of this year’s Assassin’s Creed title was shown off today. With such a long showcase, we got to see the gameplay of not just Yasuke but also his Assassin protagonist counterpart, Naoe.

Before we saw the extended walkthrough, we got a musical performance similar to the start of the show for Star Wars Outlaws. After Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ game director, Charles Benoit revealed that the team at Ubisoft has been waiting a long time to take the series to feudal Japan fans. After Benoit says Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be the first game in the series to feature seasonal changes, which, depending on what time in the season it is, the weather will impact gameplay, including freezing the water, which would prevent Naoe from using the water to stealth kill someone near.

During the 13-minute walkthrough, we get a pretty good look at how Yasuke controls. Not too long after, a Shibu Ino comes up to our hero and confirms that Yasuke is not just a dog person; you can, in fact, pet the doggy. After interacting for a bit, our not-so-gentle giant gets down to business as he shows how brutal he can be against a corrupt samurai’s minions. Oh boy, the game’s black protagonist is ruthless when he fights with enemies who actually think they have a chance against the game’s historic black samurai figure.

Interestingly, whenever you get your last kill in a run-in with enemies, everything goes white, black, and red, which is indeed a stylistic aesthetic that players will get when controlling both Yasuke and Naoe. After dealing with them, Naoe shows up killing the last one for Yaksuke even though “he could have handled it.” At this moment, the next mission pops up with Yasuke and Naoe side-by-side, and there is an option of which character will take on this quest to assassinate the local corrupt feudal lord as either of the protagonists.

For the purposes of the video, we get to see some Naoe action, showing off what we expect from the franchise: the stealth and assassinating gameplay. As Naoe sneaks into the castle, she keeps to the shadows, taking out any lanterns and killing any enemies in her way while not making too much noise. As she gets close to the lord, Naoe dives into the pond while using a piece of bamboo to breathe underwater before quickly taking out her target and three bodyguards.

Overall, it was a really good showcase for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and somehow made me more excited for November to arrive so I can jump into the game.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will launch on November 15th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
